Two PhD positions are reserved for applicants in New Testament Exegesis, provided that the applicants are qualified for studies at research level.

The holder of a PhD position shall, foremost, be devoted to his or her own postgraduate study and research. Other duties at the Department which relate to teaching and administrative work may be included within the scope of the employment (to a maximum of 20 %). A requirement for employment as doctoral student is that the applicant must be admitted to postgraduate studies. To this extent, the applicant’s ability to successfully complete the doctoral studies will be decisive. The successful applicant will be supported the first year with a doctoral grant and the remaining three years by a doctoral studentship. A PhD position (4 years) in the project “Biotic resistence in fish communities” is available.

Project description
There is large variation between natural communities in their susceptibility to invasions, and we have a poor understanding of the underlying mechanisms. In this project we use information about >1200 introductions of fish species to Swedish lakes to examine what properties of ecological communities that make them resistant to invasive species. The project will generate knowledge that can be used in management, but there is also a strong focus on development of general theory within this field. A PhD education is 4 years (48 months) and the PhD-student will get a formal position at the start of the project (Swe: doktorandanställning). Up to 10 % as teaching assistant may be included in the position (then the position will be extended accordingly).

Project description
DNA replication: We study how eukaryotic DNA replication is carried out and use S. cerevisiae as a model system. Focus has been on DNA polymerase epsilon and the studies have resulted in evidence that DNA polymerase epsilon participates in the synthesis of the leading strand at the replication fork. The research group is addressing several questions that involve how DNA polymerase epsilon builds new DNA, how DNA polymerase epsilon interacts with other proteins at the replication fork, and how DNA can be replicated with high fidelity. We study biochemical properties of proteins which participate in the processes and use yeast genetics to study the processes in vivo.

The duration of a PhD education is 4 years (48 months). Applicants should have a university education in molecular biology, chemistry, microbiology, biotechnology or equivalent. Previous experience in molecular biology, biochemistry, and yeast genetics are valued. Good social skills, ability to work independently as well as in collaboration with others, and good skills in English language are valued.

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Uppsala University, Sweden invites applications for a graduate student position in Astrophysics. The successful applicant will work with Oleg Kochukhov on problems connected to the stellar magnetism and activity, in particular spectropolarimetric observations of active stars and investigations of stellar magnetic field topologies. Applicants with backgrounds and interests in stellar physics are particularly encouraged to apply. The position is financed through a research grant from the Swedish Research Council.

[Sweden Scholarships]: PhD Position in Systematics Biology at Uppsala Unviersity

PhD student position in Biology with specialization in Systematics
At the Department of Organism Biology, UU, Sweden.
Starting date: As agreed upon, preferably as soon as possible.

This PhD project is an interdisciplinary project, which aims at investigating pollination mechanisms in gymnosperms, mainly Ephedra (Gnetales), from an evolutionary perspective. Pollen transfer, pollen-ovule interactions, ovule defence, and their impact on evolution and species richness will be studied for species with biotic and abiotic pollination. The project includes research and training in physiological, morphological and molecular laboratory techniques, data analyses and presentation of results (scientific publications and oral presentations). Longer periods of field work and laboratory work outside of Sweden will probably be included. The PhD project is a part of Catarina Rydin’s research program, which focuses on phylogenetic and evolutionary patterns in extant and extinct seed plants (see for example, Rydin et al., 2002, 2010; Rydin & Friis 2010).

The ideal candidate should have a Master of Science in Biology (or similar), preferably with emphasis on plant systematics. Priority will be given to students who, in addition have taken courses in ecology and/or plant physiology and statistics at advanced undergraduate level. The project will require an independent and dedicated person, proficient in both written and spoken English. He/she should work well as part of a team but also independently. In filling this position the university aims to recruit the person who, in the combined evaluation of competence, skills and documented qualifications, is judged most suitable to carry out and develop the work-in-hand and to contribute to a positive development of the department.

The PhD-student position is a 4-year appointment and the candidate will primarily devote her/his time to own research studies. Other departmental work, such as educational or administrative can be part of the position (max 20 %). The applicant must be eligible for PhD studies at Uppsala University. PhD student in Computer Science with Specialisation in Computing Education Research
at the Department of Information Technology.

The position is located within the Uppsala Computing Education Research Group (UpCERG) at the Department of Information Technology. UpCERG conducts research in Computing and Engineering Education, with a focus on student understanding and support for innovative curriculum development. The research is driven by a desire to contribute to the body of Scholarship of Learning and Teaching that informs educational practice in computing. The aim is to explore and develop undergraduate and graduate education in computing, and related fields, through the use of rigorous research methods. Research foci are chosen with a view to their potential impact on computing and engineering education.

The group has an extensive international and national research network and directs the CeTUSS centre for development of student and socially relevant engineering education. Moreover, group members chair the IEEE Nordic Education Chapter and the IEEE Frontiers in Education Steering Committee. The group is also involved as major partner in two Nordic Council funded initiatives, the Nordic Network for Engineering Education Research and Nordic Engineering Education Research Master Programme.

UpCERG conducts research in computing education: current research areas include Globalisation and Culture, Student Conceptions and Ways of Understanding Computing, Learning Professional Skills, and Technology Supported Education. The thesis topic for the selected PhD candidate will be in one of these areas. The precise research issues to be investigated will be defined in a dialogue with the candidate.

A PhD position in Computer Science with specialisation in Computing Education Research requires a BSc (Hons), Master of Science, or equivalent degree, with at least one year of full-time studies in courses of relevance to Computing Education Research. PhD student position in Biochemistry
at the Department of Biochemistry and Organic Chemistry. Starting date: Spring 2011

Project Description: Our efforts are focused on understanding structure/function relationships in enzymes and to apply these findings to the development of new and useful biocatalysts for specific and efficient catalysis of reactions generating chiral and pro-chiral product molecules.

We are presently working on hydrolases, oxidoreductases and aldolases. A goal is to construct multi-step syntheses pathways involving reactants and intermediates with chiral centers. Robust in vivo production of designed fine chemicals afforded by stepwise enzyme catalyzed synthesis is a long-term aim. (See http://www.biorg.uu.se/Forskning/directed-evolution/)

Thus, the announced PhD student position is part of a wider research project involving several researchers. The group consists, at present, of two additional PhD students, one research scientist and the principal investigator. Our lab is located at the Biomedical Center campus of Uppsala University. The location inside the BMC facilitates interactions with interfacing sciences in Chemistry, Biology, Medicine and Pharmacy.

Key words: directed enzyme evolution; synthetic biochemistry; biocatalysis; enzymology.

Obligatory requirements: Bachelor of Science (or equivalent) in Biochemistry or neighboring subject areas of Chemistry or Molecular Biology, and in addition, at least one year of full-time studies at Advanced level within the corresponding subject areas, including the exam project (or equivalent).

Additional Meritorious Qualifications: Proof of theoretical and/or practical knowledge/skills in:

■heterologous expression of proteins (gene/cDNA cloning, prokaryotic expression systems)
■directed mutagenesis (PCR, oligo-directed mutagenes etc.)
■protein purification (chromatography)
■analysis methods for studies of biomolecules and other low-molecular organic compounds (electrophoresis, HPLC, basic knowledge of NMR)
■use of relevant computer software (word processor, spreadsheet, molecular graphics, data analysis).
■teaching experience.

The position as PhD student may be held for four years, with extension to a maximum of five years if including 20 % department service duties. These duties in general include teaching undergraduate students. Since basic undergraduate courses are tought in Swedish, proficiency in the Swedish language is considered a merit. Experimental treatments for Parkinson's disease with a focus on glutamate mGluR4 receptor.
The project intends to lead to a PhD degree.

Job assignments
The project aims at evaluating novel, selective positive allosteric modulators (PAM) of the glutamate receptor, mGluR4, as a potential symptomatic and neuroprotective treatment for PD using rodents with 6–OHDA lesions as an experimental model. To assess symptomatic efficacy and antidyskinetic potential, PAM–mGluR4 will be administered together with L–DOPA To assess neuroprotective potential, the PAM–mGluR4 compounds will be administered alone starting on the same day as the 6–OHDA surgery.

Areas of research
The postgraduate position is part of the strategic research initiative Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services in a Changing Climate (BECC), specifically the research theme on Governance and Economics of Natural Resources. This theme critically evaluates synergies and trade-offs between policies addressing climate change, biodiversity protection, forestry and ecosystem resilience as well as formulates policies and strategies that lead to an integrated policy management. Carbon accounting is a concept that draws attention to the conditions under which climate governance becomes possible. Carbon accounting highlights the necessity of the ‘counting of carbon’ and the measures that enable stocks and flows of carbon to be taken into account. Carbon accounting is thus concerned with the ways in which carbon can be measured, quantified, modelled and statistically aggregated, for example in forest and soils, and the translation of this knowledge into international negotiations, policies and political institutions.


The credibility of a future international climate treaty hinges on the development of appropriate measures that guarantees effective greenhouse gas mitigation efforts in the post 2012 era. In the coming years, the privatisation and commodification of carbon sequestration services is likely to expand through, for example, negotiations on forests and land-use under the UN’s climate convention (UNFCCC).

Job assignments
The doctoral candidate programme amounts to 240 credits (which is equivalent to four years of study full time). It formally ends with the doctoral candidate publicly defending his/her printed doctoral thesis. The holder of a postgraduate position has as his/her primary obligation to successfully fulfil his/her third cycle education ending with a PhD degree. Regulations concerning appointment as a full time postgraduate student can be found in the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5, 1-7 §§.


The holder of a postgraduate position is expected to participate actively in the research and teaching environment of the Department. He/she will normally have to perform departmental duties, above all teaching, amounting to about 20 per cent of full time. The Ph.D. student is expected to carry out research that contributes to the aims of the BECC. Areas of research could be e.g. forest carbon commodification and governance, international politics of Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD), social dimensions of accounting for carbon in soils and forests, scientific uncertainty and the mutual constitution of scientific knowledge and political institutions.
Eligibility/Entry Requirements
To be eligible for third cycle studies an applicant must


1. Have been awarded a second cycle degree
2. Have completed studies the equivalent of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 credits are at the second cycle level, or
3. Have acquired basically the same qualifications in some other way in Sweden or abroad.


Students that met the requirements for basic eligibility for third cycle studies before 1 July 2007, shall also be considered eligible for third cycle studies after the new regulations came into force, but only until the end of June 2015 in accordance with the following paragraph:The requirements for basic eligibility for third cycle studies are met by those who have completed first cycle education corresponding to at a minimum 180 higher education credits or acquired basically the same qualifications in some other way in Sweden or abroad. We are looking for excellent candidates with a background in Political Science or equivalent, e.g. International Relations, International Political Economy, Development Studies, Human and Political Geography, Political Sociology, Political Ecology, Public Administration and Policy Studies.

In accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5, paragraph 5, particular emphasis for admission shall be placed upon the applicant’s perceived ability to successfully complete their studies, as indicated by academic qualifications and merits. The School of Electrical Engineering conducts research and education

The Automatic Control Lab conducts fundamental research in networked
control systems, control of communication systems, systems biology and
system identification. Industrial projects involve partners such as
ABB, Ericsson and Scania. A major part of the research is conducted
within the ACCESS Linnaeus Centre, Sweden's largest university
research centre in networked systems, and in EU-projects in
collaboration with European industry and universities. We have a large
academic network and collaborate with researchers at Caltech, ETH
Zurich, MIT, UC Berkeley, Stanford, among others.

We are currently looking for 1-3 PhD students with a strong background
and interest in mathematics, control, optimization, networking and
systems theory. Two of our existing research projects will support
these PhD students: one project is within the area of distributed
control of multi-agent systems and the other project is whitin the
area of wireless sensor networks. The research in these two projects
involve the modeling, analysis and design of control of multi-agent
systems and networking protocols with heterogeneous characteristics
that aim at achieving global tasks through local actions.

Qualifications of Candidates
We seek highly motivated individuals holding an MSc degree in
electrical engineering, engineering physics, computer science or
similar. The candidates should have excellent grades and very good
skills in oral and written communication. They should be ready to
contribute to an international research group adn a scientific
research agenda of major importance for European industry and

Employment
PhD positions are intended for those who pursue their own doctoral

Project
The present research project involves dynamic chemistry based on reversible interactions, especially intended for development of selected nanosystems. The programme is centered around the synthesis of molecular precursors and fabrication of nanoobjects with different properties. The work involves synthesis of building blocks, assembly/fabrication and characterization of nanoobjects, as well as evaluation in specific applications. Dynamic features of the constructs will also be evaluated. The project will be carried out at KTH, but part of the work will be performed in close collaboration with other members of a European network.

Qualifications and Contract
Only non-Swedish nationals and, preferably, citizens of the European Union are eligible. The ideal candidate for this position is an enthusiastic scientist with a master’s degree in chemistry, and with a strong background in organic chemistry and materials science. Knowledge in supramolecular chemistry is an advantage. Applicants must be strongly motivated for doctoral studies, possess the ability to work independently and perform critical analysis as well as possessing good levels of cooperative and communicative abilities. Qualifications
The candidate will in cooperation with several senior researchers and Ph.D. students participate in an interdisciplinary experimental research project that targets the design, synthesis, and investigation of new functional polymer systems for both large-scale commodity applications and highly specialized tissue engineering applications. This particular position will focus on materials for tissue engineering applications. The use of degradable biomedical materials has changed medical science during the past decades. As the need to reconstruct tissues or organs increases, so does the requisites to improve the ways by which this is accomplished. In addition, the demands on the materials constituting these systems are specific to each application and hence, a vast array of different biodegradable materials with varying material characteristics has to be made available to satisfy these short-term demands. In this project, systems generated by novel approaches utilizing all levels of order will be investigated and developed.

Requirements: A suitable background for this position is a Master of Science in chemical engineering, specialized in polymer chemistry with preferred knowledge in organic chemistry. Of merit, but not a requirement, is knowledge in polymer synthesis, preferably living polymerization and degradation characterization. Candidates must be strongly motivated for doctoral studies, possess good levels of cooperative and communicative skills to be able to interact with researchers in the same and related fields, the ability to work independently and to perform critical analysis.

Knowledge of Swedish is not a prerequisite for application. English is our working language for research. Both Swedish and English are used in undergraduate courses. Half of our researchers and PhD students are native Swedes; the rest come from more than 30 different countries.


Job description

The PhD students will join a world-leading team of researchers on programming language-based security. Language-based security facilitates specifying and enforcing security policies at the level of programming languages early in the software design and construction phase. The focus of the advertised positions is on the following directions of work:

  • To design rich security policies for confidentiality and integrity, as demanded by practical applications (such as web applications).
  • To develop practical enforcement mechanisms for these policies in expressive programming languages (such as web languages). These enforcement mechanisms may combine static (for example, type system-based) and dynamic (for example, execution monitoring-based) techniques.
  • To support the above with case studies in web-application security.

In pursuing these goals, there are possibilities for collaboration with our high-profile academic and industrial partners.

PhD student positions are limited to five years and will then normally include 20 per cent departmental work, mostly teaching duties. Salary for the position is as specified in Chalmers' general agreement for PhD student positions. The positions are intended to start in spring or fall 2011.

SuMo Biomaterials aim to achieve predictability with respect to designing materials with specific flow profiles. We are organized in four research modules that interact in a unique way. The Diffusion & flow module focuses on experimental characterization of flow on various length and time-scales. The Material structure module focuses on static and dynamic microstructure characterization at several scales. The focus in the Mathematical & computer modelling module is to model both microstructures and flow. In the Material design module we construct materials with structures varying from nano to micrometers with the goal to achieve synergies in flow properties.

Together the four modules aim towards an innovative way of working that will result in both scientific excellence and innovations.

As a SuMo collaborator you should have an interest in interdisciplinary ways of working. In practice this means that experimentalists and theoreticians work closely together towards our goals. The Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering conducts research in the fields of pure chemistry, biological engineering, applied chemistry and chemical engineering. The department is also the host for several large excellence centra such as SuMo, SUPRA, HTC, KCK, and the Chalmers part of WWSC.

The Applied Surface Chemistry group belongs to the Division of Applied Chemistry and has a leading research position in areas such as heterogeneous catalysis, nanomaterials, NMR diffusometry, surfactants and microemulsions. The research activities have the scope to develop new materials for a variety of applications, for instance in medical implants, marine paints, or fuel cells. The collaboration with industries is consequently very strong. The whole group consists of more than 50 employees, of which about 35 are PhD students. The international and interdisciplinary environment makes the Applied Surface Chemistry group a stimulating and dynamic place to work in.

Job description

The aim with this project is to contribute to the development of a cleaner and sustainable society by finding alternative ways to supply energy. Our goal is to improve the existing technologies for energy conversion devices, like Li-ion batteries or fuel cells, by developing alternative electrolytic materials to those conventionally used. The basic approach is to combine a solid matrix (for instance an oxide network) with a liquid phase (for instance an ionic liquid), and obtain a so-called gel. A key issue is to understand how structural modifications, on both the solid and the liquid phase, may affect the properties of the resulting material.

Different sol-gel synthesis routes will be investigated and the materials will mainly be characterized by NMR spectroscopy at the Swedish NMR center in Gothenburg. However, complementary techniques like rheology and infrared spectroscopy will also be employed. The project is experimental in its nature, even though the student should also be interested in modeling experimental data and achieving a physical understanding of the results.

The employment is for a period of 4 years and 3 months, whereof about ~ 5% is devoted to teaching or other duties at the Division. The remaining time is for research activities within the PhD project as well as for graduate courses. As a Chalmers employee the monthly salary will be set according to current salary agreements.

Required qualifications

The applicant to this position should have a Master degree in physical chemistry, applied chemistry, materials science or another relevant area. The student must be a highly motivated and self-driving person, should have a genuine interest in facing and solving scientific problems, and is supposed to have strong collaboration skills. Since the project is at the borderline between chemistry and physics, it is important that the student appreciates working in the lab as well as with theoretical tools. Job description

The Division of Dynamics at the Department of Applied Mechanics is seeking a new PhD student to start in the spring of 2011. The research will be conducted within the project described below.

PhD project: Validation of Wind Turbine Structural Dynamics Models

In the analysis and simulation based optimization of wind turbines, it is crucial that the models that are used give a sufficiently accurate representation of real world characteristics. The reason for this is obvious. Since optimization relies on evaluation of gradients of objectives and constraints with respect to a set of design parameters, or ranking within a set of designs based on realizations of such parameters, it is of major concern that results are accurate enough for gradient evaluations.

The structural responses from transient and non-linear events are strongly dependent on the structural dynamics system characteristics. As turbines are progressively made larger, more slender and more flexible, the requirements of the dynamic characterization of turbine models increase.

One purpose of the research conducted within the newly established Swedish Wind Power Technology Center at Chalmers University of Technology is to better enable the design via simulation at system level. For reliable system simulations, it is important that the physics of the underlying subsystems are properly modelled and proved to be so by experimental validation. This project focuses on the structural dynamics modelling of the most critical and complex structure of a wind turbine, the blade.

When adding rotation and aerodynamics on a turbine the blade interacts with the air and deflects. Gravity and inertia loading contributes to a complex dynamic system with coupling to the rest of the structure. Structural and aerodynamic damping is different in different directions. Shear and torsional properties are increasingly more important to consider and understand the longer and more slender the blade gets. How advanced blade models can be incorporated into an efficient simulation environment is part of the scope in this project.

Required qualifications

A suitable background is a Master of Science (Swedish: civilingenjör) in mechanical engineering, engineering physics or civil engineering with emphasis on applied and computational mechanics. A strong interest in modeling, simulation and experimental validation of models is required.

Knowledge of the Swedish language is desirable but not a requirement. However, all PhD Students are expected to be able to teach in Swedish as well as in English after two years of employment. Those who do not have Swedish as their mother tongue are offered courses in the Swedish language.

PhD project: Nonlinear Computational Models for Aircraft Structural Dynamics

For aircraft flutter simulation, numerical stress evaluation and dynamic response prediction it is crucial that the used computational models represent the real structural behavior well. This can not always be achieved by the use of linear computational models that are the standard of today.

When results from laboratory vibration tests or from real flight mission tests are compared to their associated computational results, discrepancies are unavoidable. In this project we strive at decreasing such discrepancies. There are reasons to believe that many differences are due to nonlinear phenomena such as damping, dry friction, backlash, load dependent contact geometry and fuel tank sloshing.

The purpose of this project is to investigate methods that can be used to localize the causes of the discrepancies between test and computational results. This will be done by use of computational model updating methodology. Further, the project aims at increasing the knowledge of the nonlinear phenomena that are most significant for the aircraft dynamics and thereby necessary to include in the computational models. The project has a strong coupling to vibrational tests. These tests need to be informative with respect to model parameters. Studies of test procedures is a natural part of the project and test improvements may be found necessary for the characterization of nonlinear behavior.

Department of Applied Physics and Electronics have today approximately 90 employees. The main tasks are research and postgraduate studies, education and collaboration with the society. The department has approximately 650 students in the areas of energy technology, building technology, electronics, engineering and media technology.

Energy Technology and Thermal Process Chemistry (ETPC) is a strong platform initiative within the department and is also closely linked to the Department of Chemistry and the Unit of Biomass Technology and Chemistry at the Swedish university of agricultural science. Six senior scientists and nine PhD students are working at ETPC. Several extensive research projects of both fundamental and applied character are run with the main focus to understand and develop thermochemical conversion processes for biomass raw materials.

Recently our scientists have successfully taken the pretreatment process of torrefaction to industrial commercialization (program stage 1) and now also have sufficient and appropriate torrefied biomass materials for evaluation as a gasification fuel. These test trials are planned in different sized gasifiers with partners both regionally located and around the world (program stage 2, 2010-2011). Extensive plans are also initiated to first evaluate and subsequently demonstrate production of liquid fuels and green chemicals (program stage 3, 2011-).

The duration of a PhD project is 2 years to PhL exam and totally 4-5 years to a full PhD exam.
We believe You can work systematically and stringently, have the ability to work independently as well as in collaboration with others. You should have the ability to convert theory to practice, i.e. skilled in both theoretical engineering tools as well as in practical technical and engineering work. Good skills in writing and talking English are highly valued. You should also be analytical, creative and ambitious.

Formal requirements include: (i) 240 ECTS credit points (Swe. högskolepoäng) of higher education studies within the area of energy-, chemistry- or process technology/engineering, of which 60 should be on an advanced level (Master level) (ii) equivalent educational merits gained in Sweden or abroad, or(iii) 120 Swedish (old) credit points (Swe. poäng)

Online Social Networks like Facebook, MySpace, Xing, etc. have become extremely popular. Yet they have some limitations that we want to overcome for a next generation of social networks: privacy concerns and requirements of Internet connectivity, both of which are due to web-based applications on a central site whose owner has access to all data. To overcome these limitations, we envision a paradigm shift from a client-server to a peer-to-peer infrastructure coupled with encryption so that users keep control of their data and can use the social network also locally, without Internet access. This shift gives rise to many research questions intersecting areas such as networking, security, distributed systems, and social network analysis - leading to a better understanding of how technology can support social interactions.
