[Sweden Scholarship]: Three Ph.D. student positions in Fundamental Physics at Chalmers University Sweden

There will be one position for each of the research groups of the Department of Fundamental Physics: Subatomic physics, elementary particle theory, and mathematical physics.

Job description

The subatomic physics group is involved in performing and preparing major experiments at e.g. GSI/FAIR in Darmstadt and CERN in Geneva, where the student can expect to spend extended periods.

The elementary particle theory group is involved in theoretical studies of e.g. supersymmetry, related to upcoming experiments at the LHC accelerator at CERN.

The mathematical physics group investigates formal aspects of superstring theory and related theories with applications in e.g. particle physics, cosmology, and condensed matter physics.

The goal with a PhD-position is to develop general research proficiency and a high competence within your specific research area. As a PhD-student, you will primarily conduct research, often together with other researchers and PhD-students. You will also follow PhD courses, be involved in teaching activities, and participate in international conferences and networks.

You are expected to write a licenciate thesis within 2-3 years and defend your doctoral thesis within 4-5 years. The total time period for the position is limited to four years full time, or five years with 20% teaching load.

The positions can be started sometime during the second half of 2011 and continues for between four and five years, depending on the amount of teaching and other duties.

Required qualifications

M.Sc. or equivalent degree. All three positions require a strong background and interest in physics.

Some further specific requirements are:

  • The position in subatomic physics requires an interest in experimental physics. Since there are strong e-science components in the activities, computing experience is also very valuable.
  • The position in elementary particle theory requires an interest to learn about current advances in our understanding beyond the standard model of particle physics.
  • The position in mathematical physics requires an interest in more formal aspects of physics.

[Sweden Scholarships]: PhD Scholarships in Computer Science

PhD student in Computer Science with Specialisation in Computing Education Research
at the Department of Information Technology.

The position is located within the Uppsala Computing Education Research Group (UpCERG) at the Department of Information Technology. UpCERG conducts research in Computing and Engineering Education, with a focus on student understanding and support for innovative curriculum development. The research is driven by a desire to contribute to the body of Scholarship of Learning and Teaching that informs educational practice in computing. The aim is to explore and develop undergraduate and graduate education in computing, and related fields, through the use of rigorous research methods. Research foci are chosen with a view to their potential impact on computing and engineering education.

The group has an extensive international and national research network and directs the CeTUSS centre for development of student and socially relevant engineering education. Moreover, group members chair the IEEE Nordic Education Chapter and the IEEE Frontiers in Education Steering Committee. The group is also involved as major partner in two Nordic Council funded initiatives, the Nordic Network for Engineering Education Research and Nordic Engineering Education Research Master Programme.

UpCERG conducts research in computing education: current research areas include Globalisation and Culture, Student Conceptions and Ways of Understanding Computing, Learning Professional Skills, and Technology Supported Education. The thesis topic for the selected PhD candidate will be in one of these areas. The precise research issues to be investigated will be defined in a dialogue with the candidate.

A PhD position in Computer Science with specialisation in Computing Education Research requires a BSc (Hons), Master of Science, or equivalent degree, with at least one year of full-time studies in courses of relevance to Computing Education Research. This is a salaried position, for up to five years, and includes departmental duties at a level of at most 20 % (typically teaching). The base salary is currently approximately 22,200 SEK per month.

Job assignments
Simulation of quantum kinetics in nanostructures using different techniques such as Nonequilibrium Green functions or density marix approaches. The aim of the project is to elaborate existing modelling capabilities in the group which are currently applied to Quantum Cascade Lasers and nanowire structures. Teaching undergraduate students up to 10% time will be a part of the duties.

Eligibility/Entry Requirements
Basic entry requirements for PhD studies are: a degree at advanced level containing at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 at advanced level, or corresponding proficiencies.

For special eligibility in Physics an independent project, equivalent to 30 credits is required, together with courses at advanced level that provide the relevant background for the planned area of research. The special eligibility may also have been achieved through other equivalent education.

Basis of Assessment

KTH is the largest technical university in Sweden. Education and

The School of Electrical Engineering conducts research and education
in the fields of electrical engineering, information and communication
technology, systems engineering, electrical power engineering, and
plasma physics. Our research projects are carried out in close
collaboration with Swedish industry and universities world-wide. The
School has strong undergraduate and graduate programs.

The Automatic Control Lab conducts fundamental research in networked
control systems, control of communication systems, systems biology and
system identification. Industrial projects involve partners such as
ABB, Ericsson and Scania. A major part of the research is conducted
within the ACCESS Linnaeus Centre, Sweden's largest university
research centre in networked systems, and in EU-projects in
collaboration with European industry and universities. We have a large
academic network and collaborate with researchers at Caltech, ETH
Zurich, MIT, UC Berkeley, Stanford, among others.

We are currently looking for 1-3 PhD students with a strong background
and interest in mathematics, control, optimization, networking and
systems theory. Two of our existing research projects will support
these PhD students: one project is within the area of distributed
control of multi-agent systems and the other project is whitin the
area of wireless sensor networks. The research in these two projects
involve the modeling, analysis and design of control of multi-agent
systems and networking protocols with heterogeneous characteristics
that aim at achieving global tasks through local actions.

Qualifications of Candidates
We seek highly motivated individuals holding an MSc degree in
electrical engineering, engineering physics, computer science or
similar. The candidates should have excellent grades and very good
skills in oral and written communication. They should be ready to
contribute to an international research group adn a scientific
research agenda of major importance for European industry and

Employment
PhD positions are intended for those who pursue their own doctoral

Project
The present research project involves dynamic chemistry based on reversible interactions, especially intended for development of selected nanosystems. The programme is centered around the synthesis of molecular precursors and fabrication of nanoobjects with different properties. The work involves synthesis of building blocks, assembly/fabrication and characterization of nanoobjects, as well as evaluation in specific applications. Dynamic features of the constructs will also be evaluated. The project will be carried out at KTH, but part of the work will be performed in close collaboration with other members of a European network.

Qualifications and Contract
Only non-Swedish nationals and, preferably, citizens of the European Union are eligible. The ideal candidate for this position is an enthusiastic scientist with a master’s degree in chemistry, and with a strong background in organic chemistry and materials science. Knowledge in supramolecular chemistry is an advantage. Applicants must be strongly motivated for doctoral studies, possess the ability to work independently and perform critical analysis as well as possessing good levels of cooperative and communicative abilities. This particular position will focus on materials for tissue engineering applications. The use of degradable biomedical materials has changed medical science during the past decades. As the need to reconstruct tissues or organs increases, so does the requisites to improve the ways by which this is accomplished. In addition, the demands on the materials constituting these systems are specific to each application and hence, a vast array of different biodegradable materials with varying material characteristics has to be made available to satisfy these short-term demands. In this project, systems generated by novel approaches utilizing all levels of order will be investigated and developed.

Requirements: A suitable background for this position is a Master of Science in chemical engineering, specialized in polymer chemistry with preferred knowledge in organic chemistry. Of merit, but not a requirement, is knowledge in polymer synthesis, preferably living polymerization and degradation characterization. Candidates must be strongly motivated for doctoral studies, possess good levels of cooperative and communicative skills to be able to interact with researchers in the same and related fields, the ability to work independently and to perform critical analysis.

The work will mainly focus on how different types of model uncertainties should be considered in the calculations, partly due to the calculation-model itself and partly due to performed investigations, in order to be able to calculate the probability of failure correct.

Qualifications
The applicant should have a master degree in civil engineering or a corresponding degree. The applicant should also have well developed analytical skills in order to formulate and solve problems independently. Good social competence and a positive attitude are qualities which are considered important. Good skills in writing and speaking English are required.

Knowledge of Swedish is not a prerequisite for application. English is our working language for research. Both Swedish and English are used in undergraduate courses. Half of our researchers and PhD students are native Swedes; the rest come from more than 30 different countries.


Job description

The PhD students will join a world-leading team of researchers on programming language-based security. Language-based security facilitates specifying and enforcing security policies at the level of programming languages early in the software design and construction phase. The focus of the advertised positions is on the following directions of work:

  • To design rich security policies for confidentiality and integrity, as demanded by practical applications (such as web applications).
  • To develop practical enforcement mechanisms for these policies in expressive programming languages (such as web languages). These enforcement mechanisms may combine static (for example, type system-based) and dynamic (for example, execution monitoring-based) techniques.
  • To support the above with case studies in web-application security.

In pursuing these goals, there are possibilities for collaboration with our high-profile academic and industrial partners.

PhD student positions are limited to five years and will then normally include 20 per cent departmental work, mostly teaching duties. Salary for the position is as specified in Chalmers' general agreement for PhD student positions. The positions are intended to start in spring or fall 2011.

Applicants for a PhD position must have a degree in Computing Science or in a related subject with a strong Computing Science component. They must also have a strong, documented interest in doing research. The ideal candidate for the project will have strong background in both programming languages and security. [Sweden Scholarship]: PhD scholarship in Structural Dynamics at Chalmers University of Technology

The Department of Applied Mechanics conducts research in the areas of vehicle design and mechanical engineering. The research is often carried out together with national and international academic and industrial partners, and it concerns both fundamental and applied problems. The research at the Division of Dynamics at the Department of Applied Mechanics is directed towards various dynamic, vibration and wave propagation problems, also with coupling to other physical phenomena such as wear or piezoelectricity. Both fundamental and applied research is performed, and although the main thrust is towards modelling and numerical treatment, experimental activities also play an important role.

The division of Dynamics has a large teaching involvement giving basic courses in mechanics and strength of materials and advanced courses in mechanics, FEM, structural dynamics, and optimization of dynamical systems.

Job description

The Division of Dynamics at the Department of Applied Mechanics is seeking a new PhD student to start in the spring of 2011. The research will be conducted within the project described below.

PhD project: Nonlinear Computational Models for Aircraft Structural Dynamics

For aircraft flutter simulation, numerical stress evaluation and dynamic response prediction it is crucial that the used computational models represent the real structural behavior well. This can not always be achieved by the use of linear computational models that are the standard of today.

When results from laboratory vibration tests or from real flight mission tests are compared to their associated computational results, discrepancies are unavoidable. In this project we strive at decreasing such discrepancies. There are reasons to believe that many differences are due to nonlinear phenomena such as damping, dry friction, backlash, load dependent contact geometry and fuel tank sloshing.

The purpose of this project is to investigate methods that can be used to localize the causes of the discrepancies between test and computational results. This will be done by use of computational model updating methodology. Further, the project aims at increasing the knowledge of the nonlinear phenomena that are most significant for the aircraft dynamics and thereby necessary to include in the computational models. The project has a strong coupling to vibrational tests. These tests need to be informative with respect to model parameters. Studies of test procedures is a natural part of the project and test improvements may be found necessary for the characterization of nonlinear behavior.

Required qualifications

A suitable background is a Master of Science (Swedish: civilingenjör) in mechanical engineering, engineering physics or civil engineering with emphasis on applied and computational mechanics. A strong interest in modeling, simulation and experimental validation of models is required.

Knowledge of the Swedish language is desirable but not a requirement. However, all PhD Students are expected to be able to teach in Swedish as well as in English after two years of employment. Those who do not have Swedish as their mother tongue are offered courses in the Swedish language.

The Department of Theoretical Computer Science (TCS) offers a stimulating research environment in a range of topics such as complexity theory and approximation algorithms, computer and network security, cryptography, programming languages, and formal methods. Security and safety of computer and network based systems has been identified as an area of strategic importance.


Online Social Networks like Facebook, MySpace, Xing, etc. have become extremely popular. Yet they have some limitations that we want to overcome for a next generation of social networks: privacy concerns and requirements of Internet connectivity, both of which are due to web-based applications on a central site whose owner has access to all data. To overcome these limitations, we envision a paradigm shift from a client-server to a peer-to-peer infrastructure coupled with encryption so that users keep control of their data and can use the social network also locally, without Internet access. This shift gives rise to many research questions intersecting areas such as networking, security, distributed systems, and social network analysis - leading to a better understanding of how technology can support social interactions. The goal of this PhD project is to develop and evaluate security and privacy mechanisms for decentralized social networks in particular and for provider-independent personal communications in general.


The candidate will join a collaborative project with researchers located at KTH, NTU Singapore, EPFL Lausanne, and T-Labs Berlin.

Job description

We are seeking candidates for a PhD position within the Algorithms group with a special focus on machine learning techniques in the area of probabilistic graphical models. This project will investigate techniques from non-equilibrium statistical mechanics for solving the problem of approximate inference arising in graphical models when applied to dynamical systems. The focus will be to derive a tractable inference procedure which applies to continuous time. These techniques will be applied to inference problems in computational biology, distributed wireless networks, natural language technology and other areas.

As a Ph.D. student you are employed by Chalmers and will receive a salary according to current salary agreements. A maximum of 20% of your time will be devoted to other duties at the department, mainly teaching. The remaining time will be devoted to your own courses and research within the project and you are expected to obtain a Ph.D. within a maximum of 5 years.

Required qualifications

A suitable background for the applicant is a strong undergraduate degree in Computer Science and Engineering. Candidates must have a strong background in discrete probability and machine learning techniques. The candidate should have a thorough knowledge of graphical models, and existing state of the art in approximate inference algorithms as well as good practical experience in implemening them.

The School of Architecture and the Built Environment at KTH has an open PhD-student position for the project: ”Real-time in-situ quality evaluation of asphalt pavements during installation (RIQE)”

This PhD research project on Real-Time In-situ Quality Evaluation of Asphalt Pavements During Installation (RIQE) aims at contributing to the development and evaluation of simple and fast real-time on-site quality control tools and methodologies for assessing and quantifying the effectiveness of the construction process in terms of characteristic mechanical and spacial properties of the pavement in its virgin state during and immediately after compaction.

Theoretical and experimental investigation of fresh mixture phenomena will be performed in the lab and in situ under real paving and compaction conditions. This means characterization and understanding of chemo-physical mechanisms during construction of asphalt pavements, focusing also on bonding, early damage and overstressing effects. The findings of the research are expected to result in proposals and, if feasible, in developments and validation of simple and fast real-time on-site quality control tools.

KTH accounts for one-third of Sweden’s technical research and engineering education capacity at university level. Education and research cover a broad spectrum – from natural sciences to all the branches of engineering as well as architecture, industrial engineering and management, urban planning, work science and environmental engineering. Scholarship in Sweden: PhD position in Solid Mechanics with specialization in Paper mechanics at KTH

BiMaC Innovation is a VINNOVA VINNExcellence Centre concerted multidisciplinary research program aimed to develop new innovative demonstrators in a sustainable scenario. The Centre is focused on a number of essential, but hitherto unresolved problems, which for a long time have challenged the Swedish Forest Industry in the development of new products. The aim of the achieved innovations is to secure and increase the competitiveness of the Swedish Forest Industry in an international perspective. The focus is on using material mechanics, fibre and surface modification technology, and material technology to create new products.

Research Project

The aim of the proposed project is to substantially increase the understanding of deformation and damage mechanisms in paper. This will be achieved by a combination of careful micromechanical modelling and detailed experimental studies. We plan to close a feedback loop of modelling and simulation with input from experimental studies with the goal to provide a tool that can be used to understand different deformation and damage mechanisms in paper. The technological use of the project is to enable optimization of paper properties and maximise fibre utilization. Within the proposed project the objectives are:

  • To develop a representative volume element model for finite element simulations of paper materials. The model will incorporate fibre and bond properties as well as friction between fibres.
  • To utilize microscopy and X-ray tomography to detect and quantify inhomogeneous deformation mechanisms on the micro-scale.
  • To establish relations between deformation and damage mechanisms and stress-strain curves for paper materials.

Qualifications

Applicants should have a solid background in solid mechanics with an interest in material science (corresponding to master level). Documented interest in research like activities (e.g. demonstrated in the form of excellent master thesis work) is of large importance.

Applicants must be strongly motivated for doctoral studies, possess the ability to work independently and perform critical analysis as well as possessing good levels of cooperative and communicative abilities. An ambition and ability to improve the competence in fibre technology will be regarded as an advantage, since the project will be performed in a multidisciplinary research centre.
