PhD student position in Biochemistry
at the Department of Biochemistry and Organic Chemistry. Starting date: Spring 2011
Project Description: Our efforts are focused on understanding structure/function relationships in enzymes and to apply these findings to the development of new and useful biocatalysts for specific and efficient catalysis of reactions generating chiral and pro-chiral product molecules.
We are presently working on hydrolases, oxidoreductases and aldolases. A goal is to construct multi-step syntheses pathways involving reactants and intermediates with chiral centers. Robust in vivo production of designed fine chemicals afforded by stepwise enzyme catalyzed synthesis is a long-term aim. (See http://www.biorg.uu.se/Forskning/directed-evolution/)
Thus, the announced PhD student position is part of a wider research project involving several researchers. The group consists, at present, of two additional PhD students, one research scientist and the principal investigator. Our lab is located at the Biomedical Center campus of Uppsala University. The location inside the BMC facilitates interactions with interfacing sciences in Chemistry, Biology, Medicine and Pharmacy.

Obligatory requirements: Bachelor of Science (or equivalent) in Biochemistry or neighboring subject areas of Chemistry or Molecular Biology, and in addition, at least one year of full-time studies at Advanced level within the corresponding subject areas, including the exam project (or equivalent).
Additional Meritorious Qualifications: Proof of theoretical and/or practical knowledge/skills in:
■heterologous expression of proteins (gene/cDNA cloning, prokaryotic expression systems)
■directed mutagenesis (PCR, oligo-directed mutagenes etc.)
■protein purification (chromatography)
■analysis methods for studies of biomolecules and other low-molecular organic compounds (electrophoresis, HPLC, basic knowledge of NMR)
■use of relevant computer software (word processor, spreadsheet, molecular graphics, data analysis).
■teaching experience.
The position as PhD student may be held for four years, with extension to a maximum of five years if including 20 % department service duties. These duties in general include teaching undergraduate students. Since basic undergraduate courses are tought in Swedish, proficiency in the Swedish language is considered a merit. The rules governing this process can be found in Higher Education Ordinance (Högskoleförordningen) 5 kap §§ 1-7. Local guideline at Uppsala University determine the salary.

Eligibility/Entry Requirements
Basic entry requirements for PhD studies are: a degree at advanced level, courses to an extent of at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 at advanced level, or corresponding proficiencies. Special requirements for this position: Undergraduate training at a university in EU except Sweden, associated member states and also outside Europe corresponding to a MS level in analytical chemistry, bioanalytical chemistry, biotechnology or biophysics. Project
The present research project involves dynamic chemistry based on reversible interactions, especially intended for development of selected nanosystems. The programme is centered around the synthesis of molecular precursors and fabrication of nanoobjects with different properties. The work involves synthesis of building blocks, assembly/fabrication and characterization of nanoobjects, as well as evaluation in specific applications. Dynamic features of the constructs will also be evaluated. The project will be carried out at KTH, but part of the work will be performed in close collaboration with other members of a European network.
Qualifications and Contract
Only non-Swedish nationals and, preferably, citizens of the European Union are eligible. The ideal candidate for this position is an enthusiastic scientist with a master’s degree in chemistry, and with a strong background in organic chemistry and materials science. Knowledge in supramolecular chemistry is an advantage. Applicants must be strongly motivated for doctoral studies, possess the ability to work independently and perform critical analysis as well as possessing good levels of cooperative and communicative abilities. Qualifications
The candidate will in cooperation with several senior researchers and Ph.D. students participate in an interdisciplinary experimental research project that targets the design, synthesis, and investigation of new functional polymer systems for both large-scale commodity applications and highly specialized tissue engineering applications. This particular position will focus on materials for tissue engineering applications. The use of degradable biomedical materials has changed medical science during the past decades. As the need to reconstruct tissues or organs increases, so does the requisites to improve the ways by which this is accomplished. In addition, the demands on the materials constituting these systems are specific to each application and hence, a vast array of different biodegradable materials with varying material characteristics has to be made available to satisfy these short-term demands. In this project, systems generated by novel approaches utilizing all levels of order will be investigated and developed.
Requirements: A suitable background for this position is a Master of Science in chemical engineering, specialized in polymer chemistry with preferred knowledge in organic chemistry. Of merit, but not a requirement, is knowledge in polymer synthesis, preferably living polymerization and degradation characterization. Candidates must be strongly motivated for doctoral studies, possess good levels of cooperative and communicative skills to be able to interact with researchers in the same and related fields, the ability to work independently and to perform critical analysis.

[Sweden Scholarship]: PhD scholarship in Applied Chemistry
PhD student position in Applied Chemistry: new electrolytic materials for batteries and fuel cells
The Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering conducts research in the fields of pure chemistry, biological engineering, applied chemistry and chemical engineering. The department is also the host for several large excellence centra such as SuMo, SUPRA, HTC, KCK, and the Chalmers part of WWSC.
The Applied Surface Chemistry group belongs to the Division of Applied Chemistry and has a leading research position in areas such as heterogeneous catalysis, nanomaterials, NMR diffusometry, surfactants and microemulsions. The research activities have the scope to develop new materials for a variety of applications, for instance in medical implants, marine paints, or fuel cells. The collaboration with industries is consequently very strong. The whole group consists of more than 50 employees, of which about 35 are PhD students. The international and interdisciplinary environment makes the Applied Surface Chemistry group a stimulating and dynamic place to work in.
The aim with this project is to contribute to the development of a cleaner and sustainable society by finding alternative ways to supply energy. Our goal is to improve the existing technologies for energy conversion devices, like Li-ion batteries or fuel cells, by developing alternative electrolytic materials to those conventionally used. The basic approach is to combine a solid matrix (for instance an oxide network) with a liquid phase (for instance an ionic liquid), and obtain a so-called gel. A key issue is to understand how structural modifications, on both the solid and the liquid phase, may affect the properties of the resulting material.
Different sol-gel synthesis routes will be investigated and the materials will mainly be characterized by NMR spectroscopy at the Swedish NMR center in Gothenburg. However, complementary techniques like rheology and infrared spectroscopy will also be employed. The project is experimental in its nature, even though the student should also be interested in modeling experimental data and achieving a physical understanding of the results.
The employment is for a period of 4 years and 3 months, whereof about ~ 5% is devoted to teaching or other duties at the Division. The remaining time is for research activities within the PhD project as well as for graduate courses. As a Chalmers employee the monthly salary will be set according to current salary agreements.
The applicant to this position should have a Master degree in physical chemistry, applied chemistry, materials science or another relevant area. The student must be a highly motivated and self-driving person, should have a genuine interest in facing and solving scientific problems, and is supposed to have strong collaboration skills. Since the project is at the borderline between chemistry and physics, it is important that the student appreciates working in the lab as well as with theoretical tools. The knowledge of the Swedish language is desirable but not a must, whereas a good level of spoken and written English is required. The selected PhD student can start as soon as possible.

Sweden: PhD studentship in Energy Technology and Thermal Process Chemistry
PhD student position at Energy Technology and Thermal Process Chemistry“Green” fuels from biomass via torrefaction/pyrolysis, gasification and synthetisis
Department of Applied Physics and Electronics have today approximately 90 employees. The main tasks are research and postgraduate studies, education and collaboration with the society. The department has approximately 650 students in the areas of energy technology, building technology, electronics, engineering and media technology.
Energy Technology and Thermal Process Chemistry (ETPC) is a strong platform initiative within the department and is also closely linked to the Department of Chemistry and the Unit of Biomass Technology and Chemistry at the Swedish university of agricultural science. Six senior scientists and nine PhD students are working at ETPC. Several extensive research projects of both fundamental and applied character are run with the main focus to understand and develop thermochemical conversion processes for biomass raw materials.
Recently our scientists have successfully taken the pretreatment process of torrefaction to industrial commercialization (program stage 1) and now also have sufficient and appropriate torrefied biomass materials for evaluation as a gasification fuel. These test trials are planned in different sized gasifiers with partners both regionally located and around the world (program stage 2, 2010-2011). Extensive plans are also initiated to first evaluate and subsequently demonstrate production of liquid fuels and green chemicals (program stage 3, 2011-).
The duration of a PhD project is 2 years to PhL exam and totally 4-5 years to a full PhD exam.
We believe You can work systematically and stringently, have the ability to work independently as well as in collaboration with others. You should have the ability to convert theory to practice, i.e. skilled in both theoretical engineering tools as well as in practical technical and engineering work. Good skills in writing and talking English are highly valued. You should also be analytical, creative and ambitious.
Formal requirements include: (i) 240 ECTS credit points (Swe. högskolepoäng) of higher education studies within the area of energy-, chemistry- or process technology/engineering, of which 60 should be on an advanced level (Master level) (ii) equivalent educational merits gained in Sweden or abroad, or(iii) 120 Swedish (old) credit points (Swe. poäng)

Scholarship in Sweden: Eight PhD Positions in Organic Chemistry at Uppsala University
The Department of Biochemistry & Organic Chemistry is located at the Uppsala Biomedical Center, close to the Departments of Cell & Molecular Biology, Physical & Analytical Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Chemistry. Research at the department focuses on organic synthesis, organometallic chemistry, physical organic chemistry and chemical biology. The department consists of 65 employees of which 35 are graduate students.
The research in organic chemistry at the department is broad and ranges from method development in organic synthesis to biomedical applications and applications in materials science.

Appointment period: The PhD position is for four years, extendable to a maximum of five years by including department duties at a level of at most 20% (typically teaching). Since first year undergraduate courses are taught in Swedish, proficiency in Swedish may be considered an advantage.
Nature of duties: The PhD student is expected to carry out advanced research in organic chemistry, to broaden his/her perspective and knowledge of organic chemistry by taking graduate courses in relevant subjects and to teach as well as participate in general departmental work such as instrument maintenance etc to a level corresponding to a maximum 20% of the employment time.
Qualifications required: To qualify for a PhD position the applicant must have at least 240 hp or equivalent of basic university education with at least 90 hp in chemistry and 60 hp at the advanced level. For applicants from outside the European Union, a GRE general test score has to be supplied.
Criteria for ranking: The ranking of applicants will be based on undergraduate grades, on the undergraduate education profile and on the applicants experience of and demonstrated interest in the appropriate field of research. It is desirable that the top candidates participate in personal interviews although that may not always be necessary or possible. In this case, the GRE general test scores may be used.
