[Sweden Scholarship]: Three Ph.D. student positions in Fundamental Physics at Chalmers University Sweden

There will be one position for each of the research groups of the Department of Fundamental Physics: Subatomic physics, elementary particle theory, and mathematical physics.
The subatomic physics group is involved in performing and preparing major experiments at e.g. GSI/FAIR in Darmstadt and CERN in Geneva, where the student can expect to spend extended periods.
The elementary particle theory group is involved in theoretical studies of e.g. supersymmetry, related to upcoming experiments at the LHC accelerator at CERN.
The mathematical physics group investigates formal aspects of superstring theory and related theories with applications in e.g. particle physics, cosmology, and condensed matter physics.
The goal with a PhD-position is to develop general research proficiency and a high competence within your specific research area. As a PhD-student, you will primarily conduct research, often together with other researchers and PhD-students. You will also follow PhD courses, be involved in teaching activities, and participate in international conferences and networks.
You are expected to write a licenciate thesis within 2-3 years and defend your doctoral thesis within 4-5 years. The total time period for the position is limited to four years full time, or five years with 20% teaching load.
The positions can be started sometime during the second half of 2011 and continues for between four and five years, depending on the amount of teaching and other duties.
M.Sc. or equivalent degree. All three positions require a strong background and interest in physics.
Some further specific requirements are:
- The position in subatomic physics requires an interest in experimental physics. Since there are strong e-science components in the activities, computing experience is also very valuable.
- The position in elementary particle theory requires an interest to learn about current advances in our understanding beyond the standard model of particle physics.
- The position in mathematical physics requires an interest in more formal aspects of physics.

Two PhD positions are reserved for applicants in New Testament Exegesis, provided that the applicants are qualified for studies at research level.
The holder of a PhD position shall, foremost, be devoted to his or her own postgraduate study and research. Other duties at the Department which relate to teaching and administrative work may be included within the scope of the employment (to a maximum of 20 %). A requirement for employment as doctoral student is that the applicant must be admitted to postgraduate studies. To this extent, the applicant’s ability to successfully complete the doctoral studies will be decisive. The successful applicant will be supported the first year with a doctoral grant and the remaining three years by a doctoral studentship. A PhD position (4 years) in the project “Biotic resistence in fish communities” is available.
Project description
There is large variation between natural communities in their susceptibility to invasions, and we have a poor understanding of the underlying mechanisms. In this project we use information about >1200 introductions of fish species to Swedish lakes to examine what properties of ecological communities that make them resistant to invasive species. The project will generate knowledge that can be used in management, but there is also a strong focus on development of general theory within this field. A PhD education is 4 years (48 months) and the PhD-student will get a formal position at the start of the project (Swe: doktorandanställning). Up to 10 % as teaching assistant may be included in the position (then the position will be extended accordingly).

[Sweden Scholarships]: PhD position in medical biosciences: medical biochemistry
Project description
DNA replication: We study how eukaryotic DNA replication is carried out and use S. cerevisiae as a model system. Focus has been on DNA polymerase epsilon and the studies have resulted in evidence that DNA polymerase epsilon participates in the synthesis of the leading strand at the replication fork. The research group is addressing several questions that involve how DNA polymerase epsilon builds new DNA, how DNA polymerase epsilon interacts with other proteins at the replication fork, and how DNA can be replicated with high fidelity. We study biochemical properties of proteins which participate in the processes and use yeast genetics to study the processes in vivo.
The duration of a PhD education is 4 years (48 months). Applicants should have a university education in molecular biology, chemistry, microbiology, biotechnology or equivalent. Previous experience in molecular biology, biochemistry, and yeast genetics are valued. Good social skills, ability to work independently as well as in collaboration with others, and good skills in English language are valued.

PhD student position in Biochemistry
at the Department of Biochemistry and Organic Chemistry. Starting date: Spring 2011
Project Description: Our efforts are focused on understanding structure/function relationships in enzymes and to apply these findings to the development of new and useful biocatalysts for specific and efficient catalysis of reactions generating chiral and pro-chiral product molecules.
We are presently working on hydrolases, oxidoreductases and aldolases. A goal is to construct multi-step syntheses pathways involving reactants and intermediates with chiral centers. Robust in vivo production of designed fine chemicals afforded by stepwise enzyme catalyzed synthesis is a long-term aim. (See http://www.biorg.uu.se/Forskning/directed-evolution/)
Thus, the announced PhD student position is part of a wider research project involving several researchers. The group consists, at present, of two additional PhD students, one research scientist and the principal investigator. Our lab is located at the Biomedical Center campus of Uppsala University. The location inside the BMC facilitates interactions with interfacing sciences in Chemistry, Biology, Medicine and Pharmacy.
Key words: directed enzyme evolution; synthetic biochemistry; biocatalysis; enzymology.
Obligatory requirements: Bachelor of Science (or equivalent) in Biochemistry or neighboring subject areas of Chemistry or Molecular Biology, and in addition, at least one year of full-time studies at Advanced level within the corresponding subject areas, including the exam project (or equivalent).

Experimental treatments for Parkinson's disease with a focus on glutamate mGluR4 receptor.
The project intends to lead to a PhD degree.
Job assignments
The project aims at evaluating novel, selective positive allosteric modulators (PAM) of the glutamate receptor, mGluR4, as a potential symptomatic and neuroprotective treatment for PD using rodents with 6–OHDA lesions as an experimental model. To assess symptomatic efficacy and antidyskinetic potential, PAM–mGluR4 will be administered together with L–DOPA To assess neuroprotective potential, the PAM–mGluR4 compounds will be administered alone starting on the same day as the 6–OHDA surgery.

Areas of research
The postgraduate position is part of the strategic research initiative Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services in a Changing Climate (BECC), specifically the research theme on Governance and Economics of Natural Resources. This theme critically evaluates synergies and trade-offs between policies addressing climate change, biodiversity protection, forestry and ecosystem resilience as well as formulates policies and strategies that lead to an integrated policy management. Carbon accounting is a concept that draws attention to the conditions under which climate governance becomes possible. Carbon accounting highlights the necessity of the ‘counting of carbon’ and the measures that enable stocks and flows of carbon to be taken into account. Carbon accounting is thus concerned with the ways in which carbon can be measured, quantified, modelled and statistically aggregated, for example in forest and soils, and the translation of this knowledge into international negotiations, policies and political institutions.
The credibility of a future international climate treaty hinges on the development of appropriate measures that guarantees effective greenhouse gas mitigation efforts in the post 2012 era. In the coming years, the privatisation and commodification of carbon sequestration services is likely to expand through, for example, negotiations on forests and land-use under the UN’s climate convention (UNFCCC).
Job assignments
The doctoral candidate programme amounts to 240 credits (which is equivalent to four years of study full time). It formally ends with the doctoral candidate publicly defending his/her printed doctoral thesis. The holder of a postgraduate position has as his/her primary obligation to successfully fulfil his/her third cycle education ending with a PhD degree. Regulations concerning appointment as a full time postgraduate student can be found in the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5, 1-7 §§.
The holder of a postgraduate position is expected to participate actively in the research and teaching environment of the Department. He/she will normally have to perform departmental duties, above all teaching, amounting to about 20 per cent of full time. The Ph.D. student is expected to carry out research that contributes to the aims of the BECC. Areas of research could be e.g. forest carbon commodification and governance, international politics of Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD), social dimensions of accounting for carbon in soils and forests, scientific uncertainty and the mutual constitution of scientific knowledge and political institutions.

Qualifications
The candidate will in cooperation with several senior researchers and Ph.D. students participate in an interdisciplinary experimental research project that targets the design, synthesis, and investigation of new functional polymer systems for both large-scale commodity applications and highly specialized tissue engineering applications. This particular position will focus on materials for tissue engineering applications. The use of degradable biomedical materials has changed medical science during the past decades. As the need to reconstruct tissues or organs increases, so does the requisites to improve the ways by which this is accomplished. In addition, the demands on the materials constituting these systems are specific to each application and hence, a vast array of different biodegradable materials with varying material characteristics has to be made available to satisfy these short-term demands. In this project, systems generated by novel approaches utilizing all levels of order will be investigated and developed.
Requirements: A suitable background for this position is a Master of Science in chemical engineering, specialized in polymer chemistry with preferred knowledge in organic chemistry. Of merit, but not a requirement, is knowledge in polymer synthesis, preferably living polymerization and degradation characterization. Candidates must be strongly motivated for doctoral studies, possess good levels of cooperative and communicative skills to be able to interact with researchers in the same and related fields, the ability to work independently and to perform critical analysis.

Knowledge of Swedish is not a prerequisite for application. English is our working language for research. Both Swedish and English are used in undergraduate courses. Half of our researchers and PhD students are native Swedes; the rest come from more than 30 different countries.
The PhD students will join a world-leading team of researchers on programming language-based security. Language-based security facilitates specifying and enforcing security policies at the level of programming languages early in the software design and construction phase. The focus of the advertised positions is on the following directions of work:
- To design rich security policies for confidentiality and integrity, as demanded by practical applications (such as web applications).
- To develop practical enforcement mechanisms for these policies in expressive programming languages (such as web languages). These enforcement mechanisms may combine static (for example, type system-based) and dynamic (for example, execution monitoring-based) techniques.
- To support the above with case studies in web-application security.
In pursuing these goals, there are possibilities for collaboration with our high-profile academic and industrial partners.
PhD student positions are limited to five years and will then normally include 20 per cent departmental work, mostly teaching duties. Salary for the position is as specified in Chalmers' general agreement for PhD student positions. The positions are intended to start in spring or fall 2011.

The Department of Applied Mechanics conducts research in the areas of vehicle design and mechanical engineering. The research is often carried out together with national and international academic and industrial partners, and it concerns both fundamental and applied problems. The research at the Division of Dynamics at the Department of Applied Mechanics is directed towards various dynamic, vibration and wave propagation problems, also with coupling to other physical phenomena such as wear or piezoelectricity. Both fundamental and applied research is performed, and although the main thrust is towards modelling and numerical treatment, experimental activities also play an important role.
The division of Dynamics has a large teaching involvement giving basic courses in mechanics and strength of materials and advanced courses in mechanics, FEM, structural dynamics, and optimization of dynamical systems.
The Division of Dynamics at the Department of Applied Mechanics is seeking a new PhD student to start in the spring of 2011. The research will be conducted within the project described below.
PhD project: Nonlinear Computational Models for Aircraft Structural Dynamics
For aircraft flutter simulation, numerical stress evaluation and dynamic response prediction it is crucial that the used computational models represent the real structural behavior well. This can not always be achieved by the use of linear computational models that are the standard of today.
When results from laboratory vibration tests or from real flight mission tests are compared to their associated computational results, discrepancies are unavoidable. In this project we strive at decreasing such discrepancies. There are reasons to believe that many differences are due to nonlinear phenomena such as damping, dry friction, backlash, load dependent contact geometry and fuel tank sloshing.
The purpose of this project is to investigate methods that can be used to localize the causes of the discrepancies between test and computational results. This will be done by use of computational model updating methodology. Further, the project aims at increasing the knowledge of the nonlinear phenomena that are most significant for the aircraft dynamics and thereby necessary to include in the computational models. The project has a strong coupling to vibrational tests. These tests need to be informative with respect to model parameters. Studies of test procedures is a natural part of the project and test improvements may be found necessary for the characterization of nonlinear behavior.
A suitable background is a Master of Science (Swedish: civilingenjör) in mechanical engineering, engineering physics or civil engineering with emphasis on applied and computational mechanics. A strong interest in modeling, simulation and experimental validation of models is required.
Knowledge of the Swedish language is desirable but not a requirement. However, all PhD Students are expected to be able to teach in Swedish as well as in English after two years of employment. Those who do not have Swedish as their mother tongue are offered courses in the Swedish language.

Sweden: PhD studentship in Energy Technology and Thermal Process Chemistry
PhD student position at Energy Technology and Thermal Process Chemistry“Green” fuels from biomass via torrefaction/pyrolysis, gasification and synthetisis
Department of Applied Physics and Electronics have today approximately 90 employees. The main tasks are research and postgraduate studies, education and collaboration with the society. The department has approximately 650 students in the areas of energy technology, building technology, electronics, engineering and media technology.
Energy Technology and Thermal Process Chemistry (ETPC) is a strong platform initiative within the department and is also closely linked to the Department of Chemistry and the Unit of Biomass Technology and Chemistry at the Swedish university of agricultural science. Six senior scientists and nine PhD students are working at ETPC. Several extensive research projects of both fundamental and applied character are run with the main focus to understand and develop thermochemical conversion processes for biomass raw materials.
Recently our scientists have successfully taken the pretreatment process of torrefaction to industrial commercialization (program stage 1) and now also have sufficient and appropriate torrefied biomass materials for evaluation as a gasification fuel. These test trials are planned in different sized gasifiers with partners both regionally located and around the world (program stage 2, 2010-2011). Extensive plans are also initiated to first evaluate and subsequently demonstrate production of liquid fuels and green chemicals (program stage 3, 2011-).
The duration of a PhD project is 2 years to PhL exam and totally 4-5 years to a full PhD exam.
We believe You can work systematically and stringently, have the ability to work independently as well as in collaboration with others. You should have the ability to convert theory to practice, i.e. skilled in both theoretical engineering tools as well as in practical technical and engineering work. Good skills in writing and talking English are highly valued. You should also be analytical, creative and ambitious.

Online Social Networks like Facebook, MySpace, Xing, etc. have become extremely popular. Yet they have some limitations that we want to overcome for a next generation of social networks: privacy concerns and requirements of Internet connectivity, both of which are due to web-based applications on a central site whose owner has access to all data. To overcome these limitations, we envision a paradigm shift from a client-server to a peer-to-peer infrastructure coupled with encryption so that users keep control of their data and can use the social network also locally, without Internet access. This shift gives rise to many research questions intersecting areas such as networking, security, distributed systems, and social network analysis - leading to a better understanding of how technology can support social interactions. Sweden Scholarship: A PhD student position in the Algorithms group at Chalmers University

The research will take place in the Algorithms group in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, with a special focus on the use of probabilistic methods in Computer Science. The department constitutes an international research environment with about 70 faculty and 70 PhD students. They come from more than 30 different countries; about half of them are native Swedes. We are seeking candidates for a PhD position within the Algorithms group with a special focus on machine learning techniques in the area of probabilistic graphical models. This project will investigate techniques from non-equilibrium statistical mechanics for solving the problem of approximate inference arising in graphical models when applied to dynamical systems. The focus will be to derive a tractable inference procedure which applies to continuous time. These techniques will be applied to inference problems in computational biology, distributed wireless networks, natural language technology and other areas.
As a Ph.D. student you are employed by Chalmers and will receive a salary according to current salary agreements. A maximum of 20% of your time will be devoted to other duties at the department, mainly teaching. The remaining time will be devoted to your own courses and research within the project and you are expected to obtain a Ph.D. within a maximum of 5 years.
A suitable background for the applicant is a strong undergraduate degree in Computer Science and Engineering. Candidates must have a strong background in discrete probability and machine learning techniques. The candidate should have a thorough knowledge of graphical models, and existing state of the art in approximate inference algorithms as well as good practical experience in implemening them.
